Web 2.0 Technologies for Learning: The Current Landscape – Opportunities, Challenges and Tensions

This article evaluates the current state and history of Web 2.0 technologies and its possible application to the school environment. Possibilities include media sharing, media manipulation, conversational arenas, online educational games, social networking, and collaborative editing tools. The article also investigates several themes and theories about the utilization of Web 2.0 technologies in the classroom. Finally, the article investigates tensions with the use of educational technology: loss of teachers’ control, creation of a global classroom, evaluation of private vs. collaborative learning, necessary increase of computer instruction skills, and others. The article concludes by arguing Web 2.0 technology should be thought of as a Web 2.0 mentality and the necessity to build Web 2.0 into the curriculum rather than add it on top.
